Plants for indoor air cleaning? - Part I

WE ARE PLANT LOVERS!
Yes! In Bioo we love plants, ecosystems and, in general, Earth. Why? We have plenty of reasons including the basic one: plants and nature are the reason why we can live. Nevertheless, plants are not satisfied with giving us life support, but they want to give us more: they give us the oxygen we breathe, beauty to stare at, and even energy for the coming generations ;) What some of us still don't know, is that plants not only provide pure oxygen but clean the polluted air so that we can have new clean air to breathe and live. Awesome, right?
Whether you knew this already or not, we would like to share with you this fact as one of the most important reasons why we love plants and why our products are encouraging to take care of them and of the environment.
Indoor spaces such as our offices, schools, homes, restaurants, libraries and many others, tend to be highly contaminated due to the lack of proper ventilation. Now, let's be realistic, most of our daily activities take place indoor, thus, if there is a way we can have a healthy indoor environment, we should make it happen.
NASA CLEAN AIR STUDY
In our case, after reading the report by the NASA of the Clean Air Study held in 1989, we decided to include in our offices more plants, not only because of what we do (electricity from plant's photosynthesis), but also to have a nice and healthy working environment, which inspire us and keeps us active, as the study recommended.
In this study, it was evidenced, first, that indoor air pollution is a realistic threat to human health and, second, that indoor plants are a solution for this problem. To start with, air pollution is due to the reduced fresh air exchange, lack of windows and the materials of construction and furniture that any space is surrounded and invaded with. This particular pollution is referring to the high percentage of toxins in the air, such as Benzene, TCE ( trichloroethylene) and Formaldehyde, which as mentioned before, are segregated by indoor human made objects.
CONTAMINANTS IN THE AIR
Contaminants in the air, particularly, the above mentioned toxins have plenty of negative effects in human's bodies. all the way from eyes and skin itching, skin dryness, allergies, headaches, up to really harmful ones such as causing the development of many types of cancer.
1. TCE - Trichloroethylene
TCE is a commercial product with industrial uses, it can be commonly found in ink, paints, lacquers, adhesives, between many other indoor used products.
It has been cataloged by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a potential liver carcinogen. It also causes illness, weakness and itchiness sensations.
Benzene can be found in inks, oils, paints, plastic, rubber, detergents and others. Due to repeated contact, it can cause dermatitis and inflammation. On the other hand, repeated inhalation of benzene can cause dizziness, feeling of weakness, euphoria, headache, nauseas and even paralysis and leukemia in humans.
Formaldehyfe is a chemical found in almost all indoor environments. It is mainly contained in paper products such as: facial tissues, paper towels, bags, etc., and also in many household cleaning products.
It causes dermatitis, allergies, irritation of the upper respiratory track and eyes. When having repetitive contact with it, it can cause asthma and even throat cancer.
According to NASA, plant roots play an important role in destroying toxins to convert then into new plant tissues. Additionally, plants are adaptable, when forced to live in a contaminated space, they will adapt to use these contaminants as food and will decompose them.
If you were of the ones thinking plants are only for the outside gardens, we encourage you to take advantage of this additional plant benefit and transform your house, office, restaurant, hotel, hospital, into a urban jungle!
In part II of this Blog, we will share the top 10 indoor air cleaning plants approved by the NASA and recommended by us to use with our product any get the maximum profit out of these amazing plants! Wait for it!
